2018 ACT-R Summer School and Master Class

2018 ACT-R Summer School and Master Class
Carnegie Mellon University
July 9-13, 2018

The 2018 ACT-R Summer School will take place from July 9-13 at Carnegie Mellon University. It consists of both a Summer School for beginning users and a Master Class for more experienced users.

The Summer School will train researchers in the use of ACT-R for cognitive modeling using the ACT-R tutorial. Each day will consist of a morning theory lecture covering one or two tutorial units, an afternoon discussion session on the topics of the day, and modeling assignments which participants are expected to complete during the day and evening.

The Master Class is organized in parallel with the Summer School. The Master Class offers the opportunity for ACT-R modelers to work on their own projects with guidance from experienced ACT-R researchers. There is no curriculum for the Master Class, but Master Class students are welcome to attend the Summer School lectures and discussion sessions.

To provide an optimal learning environment, admission to the Summer School and Master Class will be limited. To apply for the Summer School, please email a curriculum vitae and a statement of purpose to db30@andrew.cmu.edu. Demonstrated experience with a modeling formalism similar to ACT-R will strengthen a Summer School application. To apply for the Master Class please email a curriculum vitae along with some information about your level of experience with ACT-R and some details on the project you expect to work on during the Master Class.

Applications are due by April 15th and applicants will be notified of admission by April 30.

Admission to the Summer School and Master Class is free. Housing will be available in the CMU dormitories for approximately $65/day (single) or $50/day (shared).

For more information on the Summer School and Master Class you can email Dan Bothell at db30@andrew.cmu.edu.

Postdoctoral position on the Inventive Use of Mathematics

Comments Off

A post doctoral position is available on a NSF project studying how mathematical knowledge is learned and then used in inventive ways.  Candidates with a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computer science, or related fields are encouraged to apply.  The project has taken many approaches to this question including behavioral studies, neural imaging, and computational modeling.  The involvement of the post doc in this position will depend on their strengths, interests, and what they want to lean. The position has funding for at least 2 years.

Interested candidates should send inquiries and applications (CV, research interests, references) to John Anderson (ja@cmu.edu).

Postdoctoral Positions at Carnegie Mellon University

Comments Off

The ACT-R group at Carnegie Mellon University is looking for postdoctoral researchers for a number of positions. Candidates with a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computer science, machine learning or artificial intelligence and an interest in computational cognitive modeling are encouraged to apply.

The first position involves designing neural imaging (EEG) experiments and developing computational (ACT-R) cognitive models of complex skills in dynamic interactive environments to study the effect on performance of workload, strategies and expertise, and inform system design by predicting experimental conditions that would give rise to performance difficulties.

The other positions involve developing computational cognitive models of complex skills in dynamic interactive environments and integrating them with deep learning models and explanation systems. The purpose of the project is to provide insights into the processes and representations of the deep learning models to improve trust and interaction with human experts (Explainable AI).

Interested candidates should send inquiries and applications (CV, research interests, references) to John Anderson and Christian Lebiere.

2016 ACT-R Post-Graduate Summer School

Comments Off

An ACT-R Post Graduate Summer School will take place from August 7 to 9, 2016, after ICCM (August 3 to 6) and before Cognitive Science (August 10 to 14). Since ICCM takes place in State College, PA and the Cognitive Science meeting is in Philadelphia, PA, the PGSS will take place at a location in central Pennsylvania within convenient driving access to both conferences. Our current tentative location is the Cork Factory Hotel in Lancaster, PA.

A tentative program is available on the ACT-R Workshops page. More information about workshop registration and hotel reservations will be available shortly and will be announced on the ACT-R website and mailing list. To help us with planning the event, if you plan to attend please send an email to ACTR.workshops@gmail.com so that we can have an approximate head count.

Postdoctoral position at CMU

Comments Off

I am looking for a post-doctoral researcher to work on computational models of dynamic skill acquisition. The central question in this research is how learners bring task relevant knowledge to enable the tuning of a skill while still dealing with the information-processing demands of the task. We are currently pursuing this question in the context of playing a video game but the choice of task is flexible.

We are looking for someone with strong computational modeling skills, preferably with ACT-R experience. The position is funded for at least two years. Besides interacting with other researchers in our lab, the individual could take advantage of the rich intellectual environment that Carnegie Mellon offers.

The person will play a key role in this project with the goal of making a significant advance in the direction of a realistic model of human task learning.

If interested please contact me, ja@cmu.edu

Fourth ACT-R Spring School and Master Class 2014
Organizers: Niels Taatgen, Hedderik van Rijn, Jelmer Borst and Stefan Wierda
University of Groningen, Netherlands
http://www.ai.rug.nl/actr-springschool/
April 7-12, 2014
ACT-R is a cognitive theory and simulation system for developing cognitive models for tasks that vary from simple reaction time experiments to driving a car, learning algebra and air traffic control. Following previous ACT-R events in 2010, 2011 and 2013, the University of Groningen will host a spring school and master class.
Spring School
Participants will follow a compressed five-day version of the traditional summer school curriculum. The standard curriculum is structured as a set of six units, of which we will cover five in the course of the week. Each unit lasts a day and involves a morning theory lecture, an afternoon discussion session on advanced topics, and an assignment which participants are expected to complete during the day. The last day will be devoted to discussions and presentations by participants. Computing facilities will be provided or attendees can bring their own laptop on which the ACT-R software will be installed.
To provide an optimal learning environment, admission is limited. Prospective participants should submit an application by January 27, consisting of a curriculum vitae and a statement of purpose. Demonstrated experience with a modeling formalism similar to ACT-R will strengthen the application, as well as general programming experience. Applicants will be notified of admission by February 3.
Master Class: Work on your own project
Organized parallel to the spring school, the master class offers the opportunity for modelers to work on their own projects with guidance from experienced ACT-R modelers. Note that signing up for the Master Class assumes some prior ACT-R experience, either through self-study, or having followed an earlier ACT-R spring or summer school.
Participation in the Master Class is open to all who have some prerequisite ACT-R experience through prior Summer or Spring schools. Please also register before January 27th.
PRIM/Actransfer tutorial
For those interested in modeling transfer, a tutorial will be offered about the new Actransfer extension to ACT-R. See http://www.ai.rug.nl/~niels/actransfer.html for more information.
Registrations fees and housing
Registration fee: Euro 200
Housing will be offered in the university guesthouse for approximately 61 Euro /day (single, double rooms are around Euro 78.50, Breakfast is 10 Euro/person).
Registration
To apply to the 2014 Spring School or Master Class, send an email to Hedderik van Rijn and attach the requested documents before January 27, 2014.

ACT-R Website Updated

Comments Off

The updated site should provide all the same information as the old one and hopefully be easier to use. There are a couple of changes however. Probably the most important change is the ability for researchers to add their own contact information and publications to the site with the “Sign up” and “Submit Publication” links at the top of the page.  Another change is that although the links to the publication pages on the site have been maintained, the links to the specific files attached to the publications have all changed. For example, this link still goes to information about “An Integrated Theory of the Mind” <http://act-r.psy.cmu.edu/publications/pubinfo.php?id=526>, but the direct link to the paper itself is different on the new site.

If you have any problems with the new site please use the “Contact” link at the top of the page to let us know.
