The Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tools (CTAT) are a suite of software programs that can help an instructor or other domain expert create an intelligent tutoring system built upon a cognitive model of the domain of instruction. The model, composed of production rules and based on the ACT-R theory, enables the tutoring system to guide a student through the individual steps in a learning exercise: like a human tutor, the system can identify mistakes and provide precise, context-relevant hints at each step.
